Christ the Redeemer of the Andes

The story

Christ the Redeemer of the Andes

Uspallata Pass, Argentina–Chile border · Argentina / Chile

A woman hauled a 4-ton bronze Christ 1,200 km by train and up the Andes by mule to seal a peace.

A woman whose own brother was marching to war helped stop it — and then hauled a 4-ton bronze Christ 1,200 km by train and up the Andes by mule to seal the peace. The base inscription is a promise, not a plaque: "Se desplomarán primero estas montañas, antes que argentinos y chilenos rompan la paz" (These mountains shall crumble before Argentines and Chileans break the peace). The statue celebrates the Pactos de Mayo (May Pacts, May 1902) that ended the brink-of-war border crisis.
