The story
Christ the Redeemer
Mount Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro · Brazil
A Brazilian engineer's dream, a French-Polish sculptor's hands, Swedish soapstone — assembled piece by piece on a granite peak.
The foundation stone was laid April 4, 1922, to mark the centenary of Brazil's independence from Portugal. The lightning-struck detail: the statue is struck several times a year — in 2014 a storm chipped a finger, later repaired.
